After college and several years of freelance work, Valerie Gruner moved to Atlanta in 1988 to open her own costume shop, All-Stitch. She builds costumes for ballet companies all over the country, as well as cruise lines, circus performers, and theaters. To facilitate working with designers via e-mail, she acquired one of the first affordable digital cameras. Today, phones have better picture quality than that camera had, but she took to the medium instantly. Seeing the world anew through a lens and the immediacy of the digital darkroom conspired to give her a creative outlet way beyond what her stitching could express. She shoots with a much better camera, now. Her images range from botanicals and what else she finds beautiful in the world to composed pictures of whimsy and dreams. She often captures her “muses” (figurines, marbles, shells, and other bits which charm her) and plants them in environments to tell a story or to suggest a flight of fancy. She likes to transport the viewer to a place apart from the day-to-day, and if she can provoke a smile, all the better. Along with Women in Focus, Valerie is a member of the Atlanta Artists Center and Atlanta Photography Group. Her work has been shown in juried shows, invitational shows, and member shows in the Atlanta area. © 2008-2009 Valerie Gruner |
