Jill Eidiger came to us via recommendations from Val, Debra, and Sara Lindkrantz. She likes to shoot botanicals, lions, rocks, and architecture.
Lisa Johnston said she was a gate crasher, but knew she was welcome.
Members in Shows:
In the Atlanta Photography Group’s Photographer’s Choice show are Anne Berry, Bobi Diamond, Jill Eidiger (new WIF member), Joanne Green, Valerie Gruner, Jan Kapoor, and Virginia Twinam Smith.
Debra Booth and Gittel Price have pieces in the Roswell Photography Society’s Members Show, juried by Dean Stephenson and Angela Wilson.
Valerie Gruner has three pieces in the Atlanta Artists Center March show.
Anne Berry is showing in the Elements of Water show.
New member, Jill Eidiger has two images in Color Magazine.
Not a member, but our speaker, Kathryn Kolb has work showing at the Swan Coach House Gallery, the show entitled Abstracted Nature, until April 24.
Our WIF Women’s Month virtual show, Red, is showing online on the WIF website and on Facebook. It looks great.
WIF Push-Pin Show at Studioplex Report:
Our Push-Pin show at Studioplex on February 26 was hailed as a success. As WIF’s first attempt at such a show, we did very well, and it was a fun evening. We gained one new member, six members renewed, and one member paid to have her portfolio page updated.
Kelly Thompson, our new member that night, made three sales. Selling one each were Debra Booth, Aixa Caldera, Gail Des Jardin, Gittel Price, Cindy Michaels, Melanie Walter, Lorikay Stone, Alicia K. Gelfond-Holtz, and Chris Mitts. Another one of Melanie’s was supposed to have sold, but the records could not be found. The mystery of the missing photograph is being investigated.
WIF’s donation to CARE Atlanta was to be $100, plus 10% of sales, but some of our photographers proved to be more generous than 10%, so a final donation total will be announced in April.
Member Announcement:
Lorikay Stone is now in charge of Art Walk at Studioplex, where we had our Push-Pin Show. Contact her if you are interested in booking a venue there for the monthly Art Walk, held on the fourth Friday of every month.
WIF 2010 Atlanta Celebrates Photography Shows:
We will have our Artist Choice Show again at Digital Arts Studio during the month of October. Framing requirements are black frame, no larger than 16x20, with a white mat. Gallery wrapped printed canvas pieces are acceptable without framing, but cannot be larger than 16x20.
Our juried show will be at the Ferst Center at Georgia Tech, during both September and October. Because of the terrific two months, submissions will be taken at the July meeting rather than the August meeting. Accepted pieces will be announced at the August meeting. This venue has two large rooms, so pieces may be framed as large as the members care to frame them, and they do not have to be black frames.
The membership also voted to participate in an additional Artist Choice show in the Paint in the Pods space at the top of the Westin Hotel downtown during September and/or October. The reception would be the third Thursday of the month. These pieces may also by framed any size, any color frame.
April Meeting: April 14, 2010
We will have a program presented by John Mariana, where he will be demonstrating Fine Art Techniques in Photography. It’s sure to be an informative evening.
Critique with Kathryn Kolb:
Kathryn gave us a great evening of critiques, as great is the only way Kathryn gives insightful critique, and our members showed off terrific, diverse work.
Since our room at AGS has no way to present prints, the round of critiquing prints was a bit awkward, but everyone rallied to the challenge. Thanks to Gail Des Jardin for working her tech-savvy magic when the presentations switched to digital media which could be displayed on the large screen.
Kathryn’s task was to look at four images from each member and choose the strongest one. Of course, Kathryn went beyond this task, giving constructive notes on all images.
Some of her guidance for submissions:
Make a clear choice about whether you are aiming for fine art or journalistic.
A held together series is easier to look at, because choosing between apples and oranges is more difficult.
She is not a huge fan of the “rule of thirds.”
Kathryn is a dedicated member and one of the founders of the Serenbe Photography Center, which provides, at nominal costs, a variety of printing options, including traditional color and black and white, and digital printing. The SPC also presents workshops and orientations at their facility in the lovely Serenbe community about 40 minutes south of Atlanta, near Palmetto, Georgia.
